Working together to be the best we can

Weekly Update - 12th September

Dear Parents,

We have had a fantastic first week here in Year 1! It has been wonderful to see so many smiling faces coming in to school every morning. Thank you for encouraging the children to walk into school independently, they have all looked so confident organising their belongings when they arrive in class.

In Literacy this week we have been reading the story ‘Peace At Last’ by Jill Murphy. We have discussed characters, setting and plot and have written some excellent descriptions of Mr Bear. I have been particularly impressed with the number of children using connectives in their work such as and, but, so, because etc. What a great start to Literacy in Year 1!

In Maths we have been concentrating on consolidating the children’s number knowledge from Reception. We have been counting objects to 20 and beyond… but Mrs Marsh and I soon noticed how strong the children’s understanding is, so we have moved on to addition and counting with larger numbers.

Our topic for this half term is ‘Marvellous Me’. We have started by learning about our bodies – this has included labelling pictures of body parts and bones, as well as some games and songs to help us remember vocabulary. To find out more about our topic, please see the Curriculum News document (emailed to parents on the mailing list, and published on the webpage).

This week we had our first Games lesson with an external Games coach. The children had a fantastic afternoon participating in lots of fun multi-skills activities. We will look forward to enjoying these sessions for the next six weeks. May we gently remind all parents that children should have a full PE kit in school at all times (house t-shirt, shorts, tracksuit, plimsolls and trainers). Thank you!

Finally, this week the children have received their first piece of homework. This is an ‘All about me’ double sided page which requires the children to complete some drawings and sentences about themselves. We appreciate your support and encouragement when asking the children to do this. Homework and reading books will always be sent home on a Friday, and should be returned the following Thursday. Additional homework will be set as we progress through the term.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Freeman
