May I please start with a huge THANK YOU for supporting the children with their class assembly this week. I know that practising lines at home can be very time consuming so I appreciate the time and effort you have given to help the children achieve their best performance! In addition, thank you to you all for attending the assembly this morning. It is great for the children (and staff!) to see such a fantastic audience. I am hugely proud of each and every one of them, and I know you are too.
As well as rehearsing our assembly this week we have also squeezed in lots of learning! In Maths this week we revisited fractions. We have learnt to find halves and quarters of shapes, objects and numbers. We teach the concept of finding a quarter of a number by halving and halving again. Some children challenged themselves even further by finding fractions equivalent to one half!
In Literacy we have been writing our own fantasy stories about the superhero characters we created last week. We have thought carefully about how to make the reader excited about what is happening. The children are being encouraged to use openers, adjectives and connectives to enhance their work.
In our Topic lessons we have continued to think about the history of flight. Today we had a quick look at the first aeroplane (created by the Wright brothers) and compared it to aircrafts today. We then progressed into designing some vehicles of flight for the future!
We were very lucky to take part in a Drama workshop on Thursday morning this week. A representative from ‘Perform 4 Schools’ delivered a 30 minute workshop about sea creatures. The children were taken on an under the sea adventure to rescue the magic pearl! This was a fantastic session which the children thoroughly enjoyed.
Next week will be an extremely busy week for us here in Year 1. We will be completing the Year 1 Phonics screening check with each of the children. I have not put any homework in to the book-bags this week, but instead I have asked the children to try some phonics games or activities online. The links are listed near the bottom of our class page. In addition to this, we are excited to take part in Sports Day on Wednesday afternoon at 1.30pm. Please ensure your child has the correct PE kit in school along with a named water bottle.
On Thursday we will be enjoying our class trip to Legoland. This is a fantastic day out for the children, we are keeping our fingers crossed for dry weather! Just a reminder, children will need their lunch in a disposable plastic bag, and will need to wear school uniform. We will be returning to school at 4pm.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend, filled with BBQs and outdoor fun!
