I hope you’re all enjoying this sunny weekend!
It’s been yet another busy week in Year 1 – the half term break feels like a distant memory! In Literacy this week we have started our narrative unit about fantasy stories. The children have created their own superhero characters and have described their costume, special powers and personality. Next week we will be writing our own fantasy stories with these newly created characters in the starring roles!
In Maths this week we have been learning to use the ‘greater than’ and ‘less than’ symbols > and <. We explain these to the children using the crocodile trick! The symbols indicate a crocodile’s mouth, and the crocodile must always eat the biggest number! E.g. 14 < 20 Next week we will be revisiting the concept of fractions. Children will be finding halves and quarters of shapes, objects and numbers.
Our new topic ‘We’re all going on a summer holiday’ has generated a feeling of excitement in the classroom this week. We have started the unit with a History focus as the children are learning about the history of flight. This week we have explored the first hot air balloon ride, and next week we will be learning about the Wright brothers.
Thank you to those parents who have returned the permission slips for our Legoland trip. This is a very exciting trip which will enhance our Science learning about ‘Forces’. We will be attending a workshop called ‘Get Moving’ where the children will build Lego cars to race down speed ramps. The Legoland staff are excellent at engaging the children and making the learning outcomes very clear. Once we have completed the workshop we hope to spend a little time enjoying some of the park’s attractions.
With just a week to go until our Phonics check this week’s homework is a phonics activity page. Please do keep practising reading a selection of real and nonsense words whenever possible with the children. Our favourite websites are listed on our class webpage (near the bottom).
On Thursday we will begin our final block of swimming lessons. Please ensure your child has the correct swimming kit in school for this. We are also continuing our Tennis lessons on Tuesday afternoons – so far we have been lucky with the weather for these sessions, let’s hope it continues!
I hope you all have a lovely weekend,
