Happy New Year to you all! I do hope you all enjoyed a relaxing break over Christmas and that you were able to spend some time relaxing together.
We have been thinking about New Year’s Resolutions in class this week. Each child has written their own resolution on a star for our classroom (a few from each class are on display outside the school office). You’ll be pleased to hear there were some useful ones for at home, including ‘I will tidy my bedroom’ and ‘I will be helpful for Daddy’ … lucky you!
In Literacy this week we have used the fable of ‘The Lion and the Mouse’ to think about punctuation. We have revisited some of the basic elements of punctuation to try and polish our sentences. If the children are enjoying free writing at home please do encourage them to punctuate their sentences simply with capital letters and full stops. Every little reminder helps! I have also spent time this week with each group of children looking back through their Literacy and Big Writing books. They have all been so excited to recognise progress in their own books and are extremely proud of themselves for how much they have already improved since September. They have each chosen a personal writing target that is kept in their Big Writing book. Each time I mark their work they have the opportunity to earn a star on their target page. You may like to ask your child if they can remember their target! (Some examples include… To use capital letters at the start of sentences, to keep my writing on the line, to form my letters correctly, to start my sentences in different way, to use connectives to make my sentences longer, etc.)
In Maths this week we have been reminding ourselves about finding one more and one less than a two digit number. All children can now do this using a hundred square, and some children can do this mentally. For those needing more of a challenge we moved on to thinking about ten more and ten less than a two digit number.
Next week we will be starting our new topic ‘Here, There and Everywhere!’ Our curriculum news document will be available on our class webpage very soon, which will highlight this term’s learning opportunities. We have a lot to look forward to!
New spellings were sent home today – for this half term we will be sending home focus words which have been covered in our phonics lessons throughout the week. Please ensure children have learnt the list of words ready for a test on the following Friday. Thank you for your support with this.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend and that the stormy weather forecast doesn’t spoil your plans!
