In Year 1 Mrs Verrall supports the children every morning. In the afternoons Mrs Sirrell supports the children and Mrs Dodd supports the children on Thursday afternoons. Mrs Farrelly teaches the class on Tuesday mornings.
In Year 1 we use the ‘carousel’ approach in the mornings. This means the children will complete four activities (literacy or maths based) across the morning. For two of these activities the children will work with an adult. One activity is independent and the other is a choosing based activity in our outside area and quiet room. In the afternoons we cover our current topic, music, science, Physical Education (PE), Religious Education (RE) and Physical, Social and Health Education (PSHE).
These are some of the interesting things Year 1 will be doing and learning about…
Ourselves, multimedia, throwing and catching, Remembrance Day, animals, word processing, our bodies, portraits, dance, everyday materials, Louis Braille, toys, travelling with a ball, feelings, pirates, swimming, seaside holidays, special people, Grace Darling, running and jumping, our local area, relationships, gymnastics, word processing, ball skills, festivals of light, Guy Fawkes, seasonal changes, programming, plants.
Throughout the year there will be a constant focus on perfecting our reading, writing and mathematical skills.
Other useful information…
PE takes place on a Wednesdays (games) and Thursdays (dance). A named PE kit should remain in school all the time, so the children don't miss out. The children will need a tracksuit and outside shoes.
We will swim on Thursdays (2nd half of the term, replacing dance). Children will need a named swimming costume, hat and towel. If your child wants to wear goggles they can, please ensure the goggles are swimming goggles and not a snorkel mask.
Water bottles and fruit
Please send in a named water bottle for classroom use, this is additional to the lunchtime drink. If you wish you may also send in a healthy snack for morning break. A piece of fruit or vegetables is provided for afternoon break.
We visit our school library on Monday afternoons and the children choose two books to take home. These books must be brought back the following Monday in order for the children to swap these for new books.
Learning at home
Reading books will be sent home on a Friday and need to be returned the following Thursday. We ask parents to use their child’s reading record to record any discussions they have about texts and any reading that happens at home.
‘Big Talk’ books will be sent home on a Friday and also need to be returned the following Thursday. Please discuss the ‘Big Talk’ topic with your child and ask them for their opinions first but if they need guidance please feel free to offer suggestions or thought of your own. Children should then write a sentence detailing their response, using their sounds to spell the words. There is space for a picture if your child wishes to do one.
Home learning books will be sent home on a Friday and also need to be returned the following Thursday.
‘Words for Writing’ will be sent home on a Friday on a look, cover, write and check sheet for the children to complete. Please take a few minutes each day to complete a column rather then completing the whole sheet in one sitting. Little and often is considered a more effective approach for learning new words. The words will either be common exception words or based on a phonic pattern. The children will be asked to spell these words the following Thursday. Please ensure the spellings folder is in school on a Thursday so we can record the children’s results for you to see.
