Year 3

Autumn Term 2017

Welcome to the new school year! The children are already settling well into Year 3 and Key Stage2 and we are all looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

Our first topic this term is the Stone Age to the Iron Age which the children are really enjoying.  They will discover how humans first came to Britain, how they lived and what developments were made in each era.  We will have a school trip in the second half of the term linked to this area of learning.

The Curriculum News for Autumn will be sent out shortly and will outline the areas of study for this term in greater detail.

Staff in Year 3
Teachers - Mrs Knight-Thomas (Mon-Tues), Mrs Carmichael (Wed-Fri).
Mrs Gow will be taking the class on Friday mornings for Guided Reading.

Teaching Assistants (Monday-Friday mornings) - Mrs Dodd, Mrs Wilkinson.

                                (Monday-Friday afternoons) – Mr Schofield.

Home Reading Records -  Try to read with your child as much as possible and record a minimum of 4 times in the Reading Record book. The Reading Record book needs to be handed in on a Monday morning to be checked, and then it is returned to your child. If your child reads a minimum of 4 times for 4 weeks (these don't have to be consecutive weeks) they will be rewarded with a sticker!

Homework Diaries -  Please make sure these are in school every day and signed every Monday morning to confirm that your child has shown you their diary.   Diaries need to be handed in on a Monday and will be checked for a signature.  They are also a great means of communication between school and home, so the children will be writing in them often to send messages back from the teachers.  Feel free to use this as a method to communicate with us too.

Homework - maths and literacy homework will be set on a Friday and needs to be handed in the following Friday.

Spellings - a spelling test will take place on Monday mornings and new spellings will be handed out on a Tuesday.

Cracking Times Tables – there will be a Times Tables test every Thursday morning.  The children really enjoy this and it is a fun way for them to learn their times tables, which are so important at this stage of their learning.

Library - we will visit the library every two weeks on a Monday afternoon.

PE  -  PE lessons this half-term will take place on Monday and Wednesday afternoons.  On Mondays we will have Games and on Wednesdays we will have Gymnastics.  We will have swimming in the second half of the term on Thursday mornings.

If you have any questions or queries, please feel free to make an appointment through the office, or send an email to, and someone will get back to you as soon as possible.  For the first few weeks, one of the teachers will be accompanying the children outside at the end of the school day so please ask if there is anything you are not sure about as we understand it is a big adjustment from Year 2!
