Working together to be the best we can

Weekly Update 1

Dear Parents,
Welcome to the first Year 1 weekly update! What a busy week it has been!
The children are settling in well, I know many have found it to be very different to Reception – we are trying to make the transition as smooth as possible, but we are aware that it is a big jump from Reception to Year 1. We have been so impressed with the number of children coming into school every morning with smiling faces, ready to learn.
In Literacy this week the children have enjoyed reading the story ‘Peace At Last’ by Jill Murphy. We have discussed the language used throughout the book, and have used pictures to retell the story and sequence the main events. On Thursday the children created their own story mountain to show the key parts of the story. Next week we will be practising our writing skills, and will be writing our own version of the book by the end of the week!
In Maths this week the children have been learning to add by counting on. We have used practical materials such as counters and toys to help the children understand the calculations that they are completing. Many of the children can now answer simple additions (e.g. 7 + 3 = ) mentally, and some are even moving on to adding a single digit number to a two digit number.
In our topic work (Marvellous Me) we have completed our second Science based unit. The children have enjoyed exploring their senses (tasting was very popular!) and have been thinking about how humans grow and change over time. They finished the week by considering similarities and differences between humans and animals.
Next week we will be completing an Art and DT based unit, where the children will be creating self portraits using a variety of materials. Mirrors at the ready!
Finally, I would like to say a big thank you to all of the children and parents who have made me feel so welcome at Cedar Park School. I am very excited about the year ahead, and am thoroughly enjoying working with such friendly children and staff everyday.
Hope you all have a wonderful weekend,
Miss Freeman
