Working together to be the best we can

Weekly Update 13th March

Dear Parents,
We’ve had another busy week in Year 1, with lots to tell you about!
In Literacy this week we have finished our unit about traditional tales by focusing on up-levelling our sentences. This has involved starting with a ‘boring’ sentence (e.g. Jack went to the market) then enhancing it by using openers, adjectives and connectives. I was so impressed with the children’s work, they are doing so well to remember so many different writing elements. Next week we will be moving on to our ‘humorous poetry’ unit… plenty of room for creativity!
In Maths this week we have been focusing on applying our place value knowledge. This has included some problem solving activities as well as some addition calculations involving money. The children are excellent at knowing which resources in our classroom can be helpful when solving a problem and are enjoying being challenged on their independent activity.
In our Topic lessons we have started an Art unit called ‘Colour Creations’. So far the children have identified the three primary colours and used paints to mix these colours together and create secondary colours. Next week we will look at examples of artists’ work and try to recreate some of their skills!
On Wednesday morning the children thoroughly enjoyed a drama workshop delivered by Drama 4 All. The theme was a jungle adventure and the children met various animals along the way! This was a great opportunity for the children to be creative and energetic with a fantastic drama coach. Leaflets were sent home in book-bags to show details of local classes organised by the company.
Thank you to everyone who attended their Parents’ Evening appointments this week. Although the appointments were only short I do hope you found them useful. It was lovely to share examples of the children’s work with you, I hope you enjoyed spending some time looking through their books.
It will be our class assembly on Friday 27th March. Letters were sent home in book-bags to ask the children to bring in an outfit/props for the job they would like to have when they grow up! This is so that we can do a little bit of filming prior to the assembly. Please do not buy any new items of clothing, we have several dressing up boxes at school if you cannot find something suitable at home. Please send in what you have as soon as possible – children will receive their lines to learn later in the week. As always, thank you so much for your support and co-operation.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend,
Miss Freeman
