Cedar Park School

Working together to be the best we can

Weekly Update 16th January

Dear Parents,
Well it definitely feels like winter now… on the playground this week we’ve experienced frost, wind, hail, rain and snow! Luckily it’s warm and cosy in our classroom to help us all concentrate!
In Literacy this week we have used the story ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’ to help us learn about adjectives. The children have generated their own adjectives to describe the obstacles that the characters faced in the story e.g. tall and spikey grass. They have also created a flowchart of key events in the story and have enjoyed participating in some drama activities. Next week they will be planning and writing their own version of the story ensuring that they use a repeated phrase throughout.
In Maths this week we have been learning about the value of coins as well as completing some money problem solving activities. The children have thought about ways to pay different amounts (e.g. how many different ways can you use the coins to make 12p?) and have used Espresso to complete some money related activities in the ICT room. Problem solving activities included questions like… Sally paid less than 20p for a ride at the fair. She used three coins to pay. Which three coins might she have used? Find all the possibilities.
In our topic this week we have been thinking about the place closest to us… Cedar Park School! The children have been outside (and inside!) with clipboards observing our school environment and making judgements about what they see. Next week they will use their observations to determine which area of the school they feel needs improving. They will complete a group project to design a school improvement plan/idea ready for a Dragon’s Den style competition!
May I please take this opportunity to remind parents that children should have a full PE kit in school at all times. This includes house t-shirt, shorts, tracksuit (top and bottoms), plimsolls and trainers. During this term we will be outside for Games (weather permitting) and inside for Dance so children will need a full kit at all times. Thank you for your co-operation with this.
Finally, our home school agreement was sent home in bookbags today. This has been discussed with the children in class. Please ensure that both you and your child sign the final copy and return it to school. Thank you!
Have a lovely weekend,
Miss Freeman
