Working together to be the best we can

Weekly Update 26th September

Dear Parents,
The weeks are flying by and we have been so busy in Year 1 once again!
In Literacy this week we have been learning about stories that use repeated words and phrases. We have used ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ by Julia Donaldson as a stimulus for our Literacy lessons. The children have identified and generated rhyming words and have started to think about how verbs and adjectives can have an impact on the reader. Next week we will continue to use stories by Julia Donaldson as we think more about character descriptions and language choices.
In Maths this week we have been learning about money. All of the children have learnt to recognise 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins whilst a few have moved on to think about all coins up to £2. Over the following week it would be wonderful if you could find time to allow the children to use money in a real life situation such as shopping for inexpensive items in a local shop. We find that real life experience of Maths is extremely beneficial to the children’s learning.
Our ‘Marvellous Me’ topic has continued this week with an Art focus. The children have learnt to sketch various facial features and have used paints to mix colours in order to create a variety of skin tones. Next week we will be putting the finishing touches to our portraits which will then be displayed in our classroom.
Just a gentle reminder that we visit the library every Tuesday afternoon. Please encourage the children to have their library books in their book-bags so that they can select two new books to take home each week. Children are welcome to renew books if they would like to keep them for an extra week. Thank you!
Spelling homework was sent home in book-bags today. We are asking the children to learn five key words every week that will be tested on a Friday. We hope that by learning these thoroughly they will be able to apply them to their independent writing. Please encourage your child to use the spelling sheet to record their practicing, but further repetition of some words may be necessary! Please feel free to be as creative as you wish when completing additional practice… chalks, paints, squirty water bottles on patios etc.
I hope you all have a fantastic weekend, let’s hope this warm weather continues!
