Multiplication Timestable Check
Multiplication Tables Check
As part of the National Curriculum, all children in Year 4 will take part in the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) during the summer term. The check is designed to see how well children can recall their times tables up to 12 × 12.
Being fluent in times tables is an important skill that supports many areas of maths, including fractions, division, problem solving, and more complex calculations as children move through Key Stage 2 and beyond. Quick recall helps to free up working memory, so children can focus on reasoning and applying their maths knowledge.
To prepare for the MTC, it is really important that children practise their times tables regularly. This doesn’t need to be for long periods—just a few minutes each day makes a big difference. The more children practise their times tables throughout the whole of Year 4, the more ready they will be for the Multiplication Tables Check in Year 4. By practising times tables now, the children will build strong foundations to succeed in the Multiplication Tables Check. Getting into good habits with practising times tables gives the children the confidence and speed they need to recall the times table and makes the Multiplication Tables Check much easier in the Summer.
The children each have a log in to Times Tables Rockstars which, if used daily, can really help them to become fluent and confident with their recall of the times tables.
Here are some helpful ways to practise at home:
- Using Times Table Rock Stars daily or other interactive games.
- Quick-fire questions in the car or on the walk to school.
- Singing or chanting times tables together.
- Writing them out and spotting patterns.
Thank you for your support in helping your child develop this essential skill. With regular practise, they will feel confident and well-prepared for the check.
